Jesper was supposed to find Wylan and bring him home.
Kaz gave him a week and the talisman to bring them both back.
The sharpshooter never reappeared.Really there was only one thing to do, and despite Nina's pestering, it was not to rescue their friends. It was to protect his investments. He had spent a lot of time, money, and blood on Jesper and Wylan.
And if none of the Crows believed him well then that was their problem not his.The flash of light was uncomfortable, the landing undignified, and the flash of guns once his vision cleared made Kaz immediately dislike this world.
The fact that Wylan, his chemist, was going to stay with some other gang didn't make him like it any better.When it became clear that Jesper wasn't going to leave Wylan it set off a cascading effect on the Crows of not wanting to leave each other. Kaz was left with little choice but to stay in this new world.
Start over.

Inej made the decision to follow Kaz Brekker when he saved her from the Menagerie and then the decision to leave him when she found her own calling.
She had never regretted either decision and she doubted she ever would.It was an easy decision to come back when Kaz called, Wylan had gone missing, Jesper was in a fit, and Kaz wanted to know where his chemist had been taken to.Nina found them a heretic and this woman sent Jesper away with a medallion meant to bring him home. Kaz gave him one week.
The week came and went and Jesper never reappeared. A second week. A third. Most would assume that Kaz would let them go, a couple of weak links.
Those people didn't know Kaz. Only his darker sides.It was an easy choice to follow and an even easier choice to stay.She had left her family once before, in pursuit of justice and to protect those that needed her.
She wouldn't leave them again.

Jesper had been right next to Wylan when he vanished in a burst of light and the ring of gunfire.
He wished he could say that he kept his head about the whole thing. Kept himself calm and collected and managed his emotions until the job was done. The truth was more...pathetic.He had panicked, screamed for Kaz. Not that he had been much help. The Bastard of the Barrel had simply said they would deal with it later as he dragged the fighting Jesper from the firefight. His gunslinger was no good to him panicked.Once the fight was done, once they were all together again, that was when he was allowed to fall apart. It wasn't until the morning that he recognized Kaz's scheming face. His friend was trying to puzzle out how Wylan had been taken from them, if it was Grisha or some new threat.Jesper didn't care who had taken Wylan, just where they had taken him. If he was okay. If he was safe. And when they came up with a plan he didn't even listen. Just volunteered to be the one to go.
Either he'd find Wylan or he'd die trying.
Oh well.
No mourners. No funerals.
